Notes from a Child Psychologist

Preparing Your Child for The New School Year- Gems From an Educator

Dr. Tasha Brown Season 1 Episode 30

Back-to-school can be an exciting time for many parents, caregivers, and their children and for some parents/caregivers and their children, it can be an anxiety-producing time. With the start of the new school year, it is SO important that we talk about what your child needs to succeed. We know that success looks different for EVERY child. One major way we set children up for success during the school year is to think critically about the many ways that we can support their Mental health, and that's what this series is about.

This week’s episode is an interview with Dr. Britney Jones an Assistant Professor of Education. Dr. Jones has taught science, writing, and social studies to fourth-grade students and also served as a teacher leader/curriculum developer. Her current research examines teachers’ sociopolitical consciousness and their understanding of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, and more specifically Culturally Relevant Science Teaching. She also explores the ways in which schools, school leaders, and educational policies are positioned to support teachers' critical work for social justice and inclusion.

In this episode, we talk about creating a working relationship with your child’s teacher. Dr. Jones shared her tips on speaking to your child’s teacher about grades and other conflicts. We discuss the importance of assessing your child’s strengths in the classroom. The importance of taking into consideration the “whole child” when thinking about academic success, and how to prepare your child for the classroom. This episode is a must-listen! Excited to hear your feedback.
